Okay. Cyndy and I moved to Valley View, north of Denton and just north of Sanger. Our son, Cameron, and his wife, Julia, bought a property with two houses. They live in the two story house and we moved into the single story across the driveway.
We got Cameron and family moved in before the snow appeared this last winter, but we had only partially moved in. The septic tank had to be replaced in the process of the sale. As a result, the snow turned the driveway into a muddy mess. Cameron struck a good deal with a local company to professionally construct a three layer gravel driveway.
After they were finished, Cyndy and I began moving more things into our house. A good
week after the driveway was finished, I was going to get in the van when I spied something on the driveway.
It was the quarter you see in the pictures. But here’s the thing. It was obviously older than anything we could have spilled on the driveway. It had certainly spent years where it was before I found it in the driveway. I walked over to Cameron’s and knocked on the door. I entered when Cameron answered in the verbal equivalent of opening the door.
“I found a quarter for you,” I said as I handed him the quarter. “I found it in the driveway.”
Now here really is the thing. How in the hell did the quarter get on top of the gravel?
The first thought that came to my mind was that the quarter had somehow worked it’s way up from the ground through the two layers of gravel and the layer of tar in between them. While I’m not sure I subscribe to that theory, it does seem plausible. It’s supposed to take 90 days to “cure.” With the recent rain, the quarter could have worked it’s way up.
Cyndy’s thought, which is also plausible, is that the quarter was in one of the layers of gravel to begin with. Which kind of jives with my first thought in that the quarter worked it’s way up from somewhere.
We’ve also had some serious recent winds that could potentially have blown the quarter in, but I find that highly unlikely.
Here’s another thing (pardon me for my fascination with “thing” in prose. It stems from giving up things as we move into a smaller house.). We will probably never know where the quarter came from. Ultimately, it actually doesn’t matter.
But damned if it doesn’t make your imagination want to give it a go.
Peace be with you.
